These two horn quartets are inspired
by the Arthurian story of Tristan and Isolde. The story
has been told many ways and these take inspiration from
different sometimes conflicting versions of the tale.
Isolde's
Garden is a peaceful and gentle reminiscence
of times past. Imagine Isolde at peace, somewhat melancholy
but reconciled to love lost, on a warm summer day in
Cornwall. A richly harmonized melody emerges gradually
in fragments. A hummable tune, but not a song, strong
images of poignant memories, perhaps not reconciled
after all. Inspired by recent novels of Guenevere and
Isolde and the rest (rather than Wagner, where Isolde
dies an early death). Duration, approximately 2' 30".
Cornwall
Hunt is a lively fantasy with quotations
and motivic material from the hunting music of Wagner's
Tristan and Isolde, Act II. Challenging and fun to play
with a modal medieval character alternating with the
hunting calls. Duration 4'30".
