Eric Ewazen

Eric Ewazen was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1954. He received a BM degree from the Eastman School of Music and the MM and DMA degrees from the Juilliard School. His compositions have been performed in major concert halls throughout the United States, Europe and Asia and at the Aspen, Caramoor, Tanglewood, Estherwood, Warwick, and Tidewater Music Festivals. Commissions of Dr. Ewazen include the Jerome Foundation, Detroit Chamber Winds, The American Brass Quintet, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, Bellevue Philharmonic, Western Piedmont Symphony, the Fairfield Chamber Orchestra, Cantabile Chorale and the School for Strings, among others.

A recipient of numerous awards and grants, he has been a member of the faculty of The Juilliard School since 1980. Works of Dr. Ewazen have been published by Boosey and Hawkes, Brass Ring Editions, Encore Music, Baker Publications, and Seesaw Music. His music may be heard on recording on CRS (CD 8840) and on Summit Records (Summit DCD 133 featuring the American Brass Quintet).

About the Sonata

"The Sonata for Viola and Piano, written for and dedicated to Eugene Becker, is a large-scale work exploring both the virtuosic capabilities of the viola and its inherent dramatic, emotional sound. Using the two Brahms viola sonatas as inspiration, I wrote the work with traditional classical forms and structures. The first movement, in sonata-allegro form, has a soaring first theme which covers the entire range of the instrument. The second movement, in a ternary form, is elegiac and sustained. The last movement is energetic and dance-like, using 'Americana' melodies."
