About the Christmas anthem Rejoice My Friends<\/h2>\n

Rejoice My Friends<\/strong> is celebratory, a rousing ending to a Christmas service or concert. A few measures of piano interlude separate the verses. Overall, this sounds like a fairly straightforward transcription of the original tune, but the choir section singing the melody changes from verse to verse. The third verse adds some staggered entrances for rhythm interest. Each line of the 6\/8 melody begins on beat 2, for a slightly off-kilter feel throughout, keeping the choir, and the audience, on the edge of their seats.<\/p>\n

These are the verses I selected from the Southern Harmony<\/em> source book.<\/p>\n

1. Rejoice, my friends, the Lord is King,
\nLet all prepare to take him in,
\nLet Jacob rise, and Zion sing,
\nAnd all the earth with praises ring,
\nAnd give to Jesus glory.<\/p>\n

2. O! may the desert land rejoice,
\nAnd mourners hear the Savior\u2019s voice;
\nWhile praise their many tongues employ,
\nAnd all obtain immortal joys,
\nAnd give to Him the glory.<\/p>\n

4. I long to see the Christians join
\nIn union sweet, and peace divine;
\nWhen every church with grace shall shine,
\nAnd grow in Christ the living vine,
\nAnd give to Him the glory.<\/p>\n

5. Come, parents, children, bond, and free,
\nCome, who will go along with me?
\nI\u2019m bound fair Canaan\u2019s land to see,
\nAnd shout with saints eternally,
\nAnd give to Jesus glory.<\/p>\n

Rejoice My Friends<\/strong> is the tune \u201cKnoxville\u201d from Southern Harmony<\/em> (1835), No. 140, by R. Monday.<\/p>\n

Rejoice My Friends<\/strong> is part of a larger cantata, Shepherds and Angels<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, with violin, harp, and tambourine. Instrumentally, that set aligns well with Britten\u2019s Ceremony of Carols<\/em> or Susa\u2019s Carols and Lullabies<\/em>.
