Listening: Rimkus, Rotaru

Composer/bassoonist Brin Solomon’s blog reveals a lot of music that is new to me in their Music Monday posts.

Taking Brin’s recommendation, I listened to Sarah Rimkus’s MacLeod Road for orchestra, a beautiful work with passages that shimmer with vibraphone bells. Brin’s review of the piece describes the music very well. (Update Jan-2020: the soundcloud track is now gone, but you can find a perusal score here.)

In SoundCloud’s fashion, it went on immediately to another tune, Doina Rotaru’s Fragile 2. This solo for clarinet and orchestra has a slightly dark and sinuous soundworld that is very immersive and beautiful in its way.
