Contemporary music for 6-part horn ensemble, the mood of Labyrinth is meditative with a recurring low-E drone. You can perform Labyrinth with 6 horns, or a 6-part horn choir.
Note from the composer:
“Labyrinth came from an improvisation I created with my horn and my handheld 4-track tape recorder. I improvised a meditation around the drone notes. Later I transcribed it into music notation, but I wasn’t satisfied with it as a concert piece. it needed more direction and tension, so I added two additional parts, with insidious dissonance, that represent distraction and frustration — like dead-ends in a labyrinth.”
Listen
Listen to the premiere of Labyrinth. The ensemble is Esprit de Cor of Lexington, MA, conducted by David Archibald.
