Notes
I met a violist at a Worcester gig who told me that “I Rise” by Maya Angelou was her favorite poem. I was moved by its power and so wrote this, in four sections, reminiscent of a Bach Suite.
I’ve made this cello adaptation from the original viola version.
The section titles are related to sections of the poem:
- Rising from the dust
- Rising like the tides
- Rising in the face of your dismay
- Rising from dust to dreams
