Notes
I met a violist at a Worcester gig who told me that “I Rise” by Maya Angelou was her favorite poem. I was moved by its power and so wrote this, in four sections, reminiscent of a Bach Suite.
The section titles come from lines in the poem:
- Like dust, I’ll rise
- With the certainty of tides…i’ll rise
- Does my sassiness…my haughtiness…my sexiness upset you?
- Out of the huts…I rise…I am the dream and the hope…I rise
This version for viola is my original concept. I’ve also adapted Rising for cello.
