A jazzy piece in two short movements
with a solo part for Alpenhorn. The movements are Meditation
and Scherzo.
There are two editions, one for
Alpenhorn in F (which is more common in the U.S.) and
for Alpenhorn
in Gb (more common in Switzerland). In both editions,
the Alpenhorn part can be played on Horn in F if your
horn player doesn't have an Alpenhorn handy. The bass
part can be played by either tuba or bass trombone.
Duration 4'.
Review
of Hillslide by William Scharnberg.
From The Horn Call, No. 25.2, February 1995, published
by the International Horn Society:
Hillslide, scored for
traditional quintet instrumentation with the hornist
performing on alphorn, has two movements: "Meditation"
and "Scherzo." The limited harmonics of the
alphorn are treated well and the composer adds some
pitch-bending on c and c' for an interesting effect.
The quintet parts are not difficult, playable by a good
high school-level quintet (grade 4-5). The first Bb
trumpet ascends to a written c'" at the very end,
but the part is notated with an option of taking the
passage down an octave. If you own an alphorn and perform
regularly with a quintet, this would be a good addition
to your repertoire. [Composer's note: The alphorn part
can also be played on regular horn.]
